January is the perfect time to snuggle up with your Littles and read some great books! Devoting (and protecting) twenty minutes a day to snuggling on the sofa with my kids and reading a book has become a true highlight of our day.
You see, this simple act of bringing everyone together during the day’s lowest energy point (for us, it’s at about 2:30-3:00ish) really re-sets the day. We look at the pictures, ask questions, think about the illustrator’s style, which page was interesting to us, and so forth. Mom hack: a cup of hot coffee and a cup of hot chocolate (or even water in a fancy cup) for your Littles during your read aloud time kicks it up a notch! Let them feel like this time is a special time with you together-because it IS!
Here are our favorite wintery books for you and your family this Winter season-enjoy! I also have an entire post with snow-themed activities including the books you’ll see below. You can find that post here with lots of inspiration and ideas to do with your kiddos!
Snowflake Bentley I have had this one on my book list since the Fall! This is a children’s biography about a man who studied and photographed snow flakes. I can’t wait to dive into this one with my daughter (age 5).
Owl Moon I am so drawn to the illustrations in this book. The pictures are so beautiful and really embodies the mood of what winter feels like!
No Two Alike As a mom of identical twins, this book speaks to me (although it is not marketed as a twin book). Just as no two snowflakes are alike, neither is anything else. It’s a wonderful book that lends itself to how wonderful our Creator is in my opinion 🙂
Brave Irene This book is empowering as it portrays a little girl overcoming obstacles…thanks to snow! This is a newer book for our family, and I can’t wait to read it with my daughter this month!
The Snowy Day I fell in love with this book at a local library’s Storytime two years ago. The illustrations are so simple and powerful, and it is no wonder it is a Caldecott Award winner! Fun fact: Amazon Prime Video also has this book told as a short cartoon with Boyz II Men as part of the cast. We watched it A LOT last winter!
Snow (by Cynthia Rylant) I love Cynthia Rylant’s use of words in all of her writing. This book is so special and charming…and makes us crave the magic of snow!
The Mitten and Snowy Nap You really can’t go wrong with a Jan Brett book. Both are these are great for sequencing and retelling, and all three of my kids love the illustrations of animals.
Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light The illustrations in this book are beautiful and convey the mood of walking through snow at night while the main character (bear) learns to show kindness. There are a lot of extension activities you can do with this book too…I could write a whole post just on that!
Snow (by Uri Shulevitz) When my daughter was three, we read this over and over again. It’s simple and poetic, and I love how the story shows the boy’s unwavering faith that snow WILL come!
Over and Under the Snow This book is part of a 4-part series that travels through life above the dirt (snow) and under it-so much discovery! I always have one of these books in our book list for each season.
Bear Snores On I almost made it through a whole Winter themed book post without adding this one on! This is our number one read book in our house. We can all recite it…we read it year round, but it really is THE perfect Winter picture book!
Now, if only we could get some actual snow in central North Carolina…
Happy Winter, friends!
