Just because this virus has tried to steal all joy from 2020, I could not let my girl’s birthday go by without some sort of celebration! I didn’t think a party was appropriate with the health mandates still in place in our state, and I didn’t want anyone to feel pressured or uncomfortable about coming to a party, so we decided a drive-by party would be the best compromise!
I had attended birthday parades earlier this year for older children, and I didn’t think my three year old would “get it” if we went that route, so we planned to offer a treat for guests to enjoy when they stopped so she could at least see her friends (ya can’t see much when you’re in car seats in the back of your mama’s SUV…). On the invitations, I made a rolling time for guests to come to help alleviate the potential for a crowd at any point (and it worked!). I found the perfect popsicle dress for my girl to wear from Boden, so it was the narrator of the party for colors! Diane from Hey Cute Design created the perfect matching invitations, and Megan from Hip Hip Hooray Creative Events came over early Saturday morning to install garlands both on the garage and the mailbox that had been prepped the night before.
The main point of celebrating my girl’s birthday was that I wanted her to feel special, loved, and have photo memories. I made the focus of her party the guests (her still being able to see them amidst covid) and the balloon garland as I knew it would create a great photo backdrop.
I had originally planned to have chalk and hula hoops out for kids to play with during their time in our drive-way, but it had rained the night before, so everything was pretty wet. In true 2020 fashion, we are always left unprepared, right? The past two birthday parties for R have been so hot-2019 it was 96 degrees during her party…I knew for sure a popsicle party would be the perfect i.e. cool treat this year. However, the weather flipped on us and there we all were sporting our jean jackets over our dresses instead this year! Nonetheless, all I had to prep was the cooler full of popsicles and ice, napkins, wipes, a trashcan, and cupcake liners to help with the dripping on little hands. Not worrying about guests getting heat-stroke was a plus.
We hosted the party from 11-1 to leave plenty of time for naptime afterwards. By far it was the easiest (and most inexpensive) party I’ve ever hosted! Who would have thought our drive-way would serve as the perfect venue?
